**Conservatives**
The Conservatives of the 1970s-1980s were a "new right" that emerged with the rise of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. These new conservatives took over the majority of the government during this time.

**Reaganomics**
A set of economic policies devised by Ronald Reagan that used "supply side" economics, which utilizes the same principles as the "trickle-down" theory. Basically, the wealthy were taxed less in the hope that they would use their extra money to promote business. However, this did not work, and America entered a short recession.

**Deregulation**
Deregulation is the process of reducing governmental regulation on the economy. Mainly used during the 1970s-1980s, it primarily deregulated the airlines, trucking, railroads, and government spending on workers, consumer protection, and the environment. Deregulation as a whole hurt the economy.

**Iran-Contra Scandal**
A scandal in which the Reagan administration sold weapons to Iran to free American hostages, and a portion of those funds were sent to the contras in Nicaragua, even though the Boland Amendment prohibited this. The president was not found to be implicated in this scandal, but many members of his administration were; they were all pardoned later by George H.W. Bush.

**Star Wars (Not the movie)**
Star Wars was the development of weapons that could intercept and destroy any incoming nuclear missiles.

**Glasnost**
A policy made under the new leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, that promoted "transparency." This meant that more people in the USSR now had more freedoms, such as freedom of speech. This freedom of speech would help change how people in the USSR viewed their government.

**Perestroika**
A movement in the Soviet Union that advocated reconstruction. The leader of this movement was Mikhail Gorbachev, and the reconstruction was that of the government. Perestroika is associated with being the cause of the end of the Soviet Union.

**Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)**
An act made in 1990 that made it illegal to discriminate against the disabled.

**Persian Gulf War**
The Persian Gulf War happened during 1990-1991. It was a war against Iraq in response to their attempt to invade Kuwait. The war included Operation Desert Storm, a three-month bombing campaign, and Operation Desert Shield, a ten-hour campaign to push back the Iraqi forces. This war was widely successful and eliminated Americans' fears of wars.

**North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)**
A trade agreement that made it so that trade between America, Mexico, and Canada has no tariffs placed upon it. Because of this, goods made in Mexico became cheaper to buy than American goods, as there were no tariffs on the Mexican goods.

**Brady Bill**
The first federal law made to limit the Second Amendment. This bill allowed for background checks on people trying to buy guns, so that not just anyone could get a gun.

**AmeriCorps**
A corps created under Bill Clinton to foster economic growth and job opportunities for people in America.

**Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT)**
A military policy where gay men could join the military if they did not go around expressing the fact that they are gay. It was enacted under Bill Clinton and was removed under Obama.

**Kyoto Protocol**
An event where many countries met in Kyoto, Japan to discuss the rising problem of the hole in the ozone layer. The protocol itself required participating countries to reduce fuel usage and start switching to more eco-friendly technology. America and China did not sign the Kyoto Protocol.

**Whitewater Scandal**
A scandal in which the Clintons were accused of using their position in government to find out the value of land in Whitewater and then buy it while it was still cheap. The Clintons were not found guilty, but many of their friends were.

**Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)**
An act created under Bill Clinton that allowed a person to leave work for 12 weeks to attend to a family emergency without the fear of being fired. The 12 weeks off are unpaid.
