  • A. 3 and 5 respectively
  • B. 3 and 1 respectively
  • C. 2 and 7 respectively
  • D. 1/6 and 5/6 respectively

Solving diamond patterned problem

The given diamond pattern is solved by multiplying the right and left number to give the top number. Then adding the right and left number to give the lower number.

A:

x × y = 15

x + y = 8

From (2)

x = 8 - y

x × y = 15

(8 - y) × y = 15

-y² + 8y = 15

-y² + 8y - 15 = 0

y² - 8y + 15 = 0

y² - 5y - 3y + 15 = 0

y(y - 5) - 3(y - 5) = 0

(y - 5) (y - 3) = 0

y = 5 or y = 3

When y = 5

Substitute into

x + y = 8

x + 5 = 8

x = 8 - 5

x = 3

When y = 3

Substitute into

x + y = 8

x + 3 = 8

x = 8 - 3

x = 5

B.

3 × 1 = 3

3 + 1 = 4

C.

5 × y = 10

5y = 10

y = 10/5

y = 2

5 × 2 = 10

5 + 2 = 7

D.

1/2 × 1/3 = 1/6

1/2 + 1/3 = (3+2) /6

= 5/6
