Which of the following is true about osmosis?

A. Includes transport proteins.
B. Includes a semi-permeable membrane.
C. Involves both the diffusion of water and a semi-permeable membrane.
D. Involves both a semi-permeable membrane and transport proteins.
E. Involves the diffusion of water.

Answer :

Osmosis involves both the diffusion of water and a semi-permeable membrane. Osmosis doesn't require energy to move the water across the semi-permeable membrane.

What is osmosis?

Osmosis is a mechanism by which water moves from a higher to a lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane without the need for energy. It is a passive process, as energy is not used for the entry of water. Water cannot enter or exit the cell due to the hydrophobic nature of the plasma membrane. So the water diffuses along the concentration gradient through aquaporin channels.

Because not all molecules can enter the cell, the cell plasma membrane is a selectively permeable membrane. Other molecules, such as nonpolar, small molecules (oxygen), can easily pass across the cell, but large polar molecules can't. The movements of these molecules are called "diffusion," as they don't involve energy.

Hence, osmosis involves both the diffusion of water and a semi-permeable membrane.

Answer:

I'm not quite sure what exactly your question is, but here's something that might help.

Explanation:

Diffusion is the random motion of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. ( By the way, concentration is a measurement of how much solute exists within a certain volume of solvent.)

Osmosis, however, is the tendency of a solvent to travel across a semipermeable membrane into areas of higher solute concentration. An example of this process would be drinking seawater. If you were to do so, osmosis would cause water to move out of your cells into the area of higher solute concentration ( the salt in the seawater you just drank). You essentially dehydrate your cells and therefore can die ( if you drink enough). Again, I'm not sure what your point was in your question, but I hope this helped! :)
