Case Study: No More Dawdling Over Dishes

Andy Davis was proud of his restaurant, The Golden Bow. Its location was perfect, its decor tasteful, and its clientele generous and distinguished. When he first took over the business a year ago, Davis had worried about the local labor shortage making it difficult to hire good workers. However, he made contacts at a local college and hired a group of servers who worked well with customers and each other. The only unsolved problem was the dishwasher.

Initially, Davis felt lucky finding Eddie Munz, a local high school dropout with some experience washing dishes. Davis could only afford to pay $4 an hour, which Eddie did not mind. Eddie managed to get the dishes clean, but he was slow. Davis noticed Eddie talking to the cooks, turning his back on the dishes, nibbling desserts from dirty plates, and spraying servers with water. The kitchen was messy, with dishes piling up, and even two hours after closing, Eddie was still working. Davis suspected Eddie’s slow pace was intentional since he was paid by the hour.

To address this, Davis had a talk with Eddie. He realized Eddie was making $28 on efficient nights and proposed to pay him the same amount for finishing the job, regardless of time. Eddie, who disliked working until 2:00 a.m., agreed enthusiastically.

A new chalkboard appeared, labeled "Eddie’s Goal for a Record Time." By the first week’s end, it read "1." Davis noticed no decrease in the quality of Eddie’s work. Eventually, the goal was reduced to "42 minutes." Eddie transformed from "Eddie the Slob" to "Eddie the Perfectionist," maintaining a spotless area and accepting no flaws. Servers helped him break records, and after finishing early, they all celebrated together.
