A remote rural community in Jamaica has been experiencing severe water shortages for the past four months. The area is usually served by three standpipes that receive water once per week on Sundays, albeit at very low pressures. There is a river approximately 2 km away, where residents routinely collect water for both potable and non-potable uses. The citizens typically treat drinking water by adding 2 drops of bleach to every five gallons. However, the collected water, despite these interventions, does not consistently meet National Primary Drinking Water Standards, and many cannot afford to purchase bottled water. Therefore, there is a need for a Point of Use (POU) Water Treatment Method to provide safe drinking water for every household member. The method designed must be user-friendly, inexpensive, practical, and effective.

(i) Identify a POU Treatment method appropriate for the scenario described. Briefly describe how it works in terms of the physical, chemical, and/or biochemical processes involved in the removal of clearly identified pollutants. Include chemical equations where appropriate. (7 marks)

(ii) Describe how you would set up the POU method described in part (i) and the steps one would take to ensure and check that the treated water meets National Primary Drinking Water Standards. Include a suitably labeled diagram illustrating the method setup. (8 marks)
