**Stage Set:** Girl is selling flowers. She is happy and smiling. Walpole watches her for a few seconds.

**WALPOLE:** (walking up to the flower stand) Do you know a Walpole?

**GIRL:** No, but I heard he was moving into this town, our town—Red Town! Roses for your darling?

**WALPOLE:** Do you grow these yourself?

**GIRL:** Nobody ever asks me that! No, my mother does. How could I? I cannot see.

**WALPOLE:** Oh, but I couldn't tell at all. Your eyes are very pretty.

**GIRL:** That is kind of you. (feeling the red roses with her fingers) So, would you like these red ones?

**WALPOLE:** Maybe. Are you from this town?

**GIRL:** Why, I grew up here. I know just about everyone. You know nobody passes by this street without buying a rose from me.

**WALPOLE:** I didn't say I was not going to buy one, sweetheart. So, did your parents grow up here, too?

**GIRL:** Boy, you would like to know a lot about me, wouldn't you?

**WALPOLE:** I just think you seem very sweet. So, what do you know about this Walpole guy?

**GIRL:** Well, they say ... (whispering) they say he is odd. People in this town are scared of him, and he is not even here.

**WALPOLE:** Oh really?

**GIRL:** The house he picked was abandoned for decades. There is something creepy about him for sure.
